“A for Alighiero, B for Boetti” so says a phrase in one of his famous squares.

A&B, like the initials of his daughter’s name, Agata Boetti. When placed together with no full stops, their initials spell out ABAB, “like the alternate rhyme scheme: ‘Gioco / di mano / gioco / di villano’ (never use your fists). ABAB when read back to front becomes ‘Baba’, an Ali who knows the magic formulas that open up treasure caves.”

This is how Stefano Bartezzaghi portrays the artist Alighiero Boetti, using pencils, games and puzzles. From the codes he used to classify artists - himself included - and never since deciphered, to the improbable collection of cartoons from the “Settimana enigmistica”, cut out and put aside for an exhibition that was never held.

ABAB. La stanza dei giochi di Agata e Alighiero Boetti pays homage to Boetti and the leitmotif of irony and playfulness that characterised his art and his role as a parent.

Eyes and looks, observers and spectators animate many of Giulio Paolini’s works. The clear reference to the visual act, however, does not open our gaze upon any actual vision, nor does it disclose the field to visionariness. Paolini’s device of the gaze is turned upon itself – upon “the ancient phenomenon of seeing” – in order to observe the artifices of representation and enforce the mechanisms of expecting and searching for an image.

The theme of seeing (and not seeing) in Paolini is investigated in this first volume of the In tema series through four essays – written by Erich Franz, Johannes Meinhardt, Riccardo Venturi and Elena Volpato – which draw their inspiration from theoretical reflections and methodological approaches that differ profoundly from one another.

As in the other books dedicated to Giulio Paolini, Giulio Paolini. Vedo e non vedo is enhanced by an original design (a concertina folded insert) created by Giulio Paolinii especially for the occasion.

Graphics and Industry is an illustrated bibliography, a collection of commercial catalogues that were created for design companies between 1906 and 2002.

It is published to mark the exhibition of the same name held at the Bibliothèque des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the book traces the history of Italian editorial graphic design through a new and unusual context, the layout of commercial catalogues.

Arranged alphabetically throughout the book with captions in Italian and English, there are brochures, booklets, catalogues and leaflets featuring innovative and revolutionary designs. A range of projects that saw some of Italy’s foremost designers, such as Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Enzo Mari and Giovanni Pintori, put their skills as graphic designers to the test.
