Making a REALLY great exhibition takes many people, with many different skills. Artists, curators, photographers, exhibition designers, museum directors and many other colourful and lively characters give us a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an art exhibition, from the moment the work takes shape in the artist's mind to its arrival on the white walls of a gallery.

Graphics and Industry is an illustrated bibliography, a collection of commercial catalogues that were created for design companies between 1906 and 2002.

It is published to mark the exhibition of the same name held at the Bibliothèque des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the book traces the history of Italian editorial graphic design through a new and unusual context, the layout of commercial catalogues.

Arranged alphabetically throughout the book with captions in Italian and English, there are brochures, booklets, catalogues and leaflets featuring innovative and revolutionary designs. A range of projects that saw some of Italy’s foremost designers, such as Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Enzo Mari and Giovanni Pintori, put their skills as graphic designers to the test.

Eyes and looks, observers and spectators animate many of Giulio Paolini’s works. The clear reference to the visual act, however, does not open our gaze upon any actual vision, nor does it disclose the field to visionariness. Paolini’s device of the gaze is turned upon itself – upon “the ancient phenomenon of seeing” – in order to observe the artifices of representation and enforce the mechanisms of expecting and searching for an image.

The theme of seeing (and not seeing) in Paolini is investigated in this first volume of the In tema series through four essays – written by Erich Franz, Johannes Meinhardt, Riccardo Venturi and Elena Volpato – which draw their inspiration from theoretical reflections and methodological approaches that differ profoundly from one another.

As in the other books dedicated to Giulio Paolini, Giulio Paolini. Vedo e non vedo is enhanced by an original design (a concertina folded insert) created by Giulio Paolinii especially for the occasion.

“A for Alighiero, B for Boetti” so says a phrase in one of his famous squares.

A&B, like the initials of his daughter’s name, Agata Boetti. When placed together with no full stops, their initials spell out ABAB, “like the alternate rhyme scheme: ‘Gioco / di mano / gioco / di villano’ (never use your fists). ABAB when read back to front becomes ‘Baba’, an Ali who knows the magic formulas that open up treasure caves.”

This is how Stefano Bartezzaghi portrays the artist Alighiero Boetti, using pencils, games and puzzles. From the codes he used to classify artists - himself included - and never since deciphered, to the improbable collection of cartoons from the “Settimana enigmistica”, cut out and put aside for an exhibition that was never held.

ABAB. La stanza dei giochi di Agata e Alighiero Boetti pays homage to Boetti and the leitmotif of irony and playfulness that characterised his art and his role as a parent.

Alighiero e Boetti. Beyond books covers the intense activity of printer Alighiero Boetti, from his artists’ books to posters and exhibition invitations, taking a look along the way at his long association with newspaper “Il Manifesto”.

Boetti was both typesetter and director of his work, shifting from the role of creator to graphic artist to rewrite and redesign the informative materials on his work. And this is how the artists’ books were born. A limited number of books with hard red cloth covers – Boetti’s trademark – linked by one common feature: they were pieces of real craftsmanship and a fusion of the traditions of printing and art.

Alighiero Boetti’s books tell of an observer heedless of his own era. One who talks to us of his obsessions and his desire to go beyond the surface and the way in which things appear, to reach a deeper level of being and a new, concise and intimate awareness of emotional reality. In his artists’ books, Boetti manages to abstract reality, probing the unprobable and grasping the ungraspable definition of what surrounds us.

In the early 1960s—by which time his dedication to seeking a primordial language rooted in mythology and the unconscious was clearly established—Gastone Novelli built a home in Saturnia, making this town of Etruscan origin a meeting place for fellow artists and intellectuals.

This book, edited by Anna Cristina Caputi and Guglielmo Buda, focuses on Novelli’s relationship with this area and is published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name. Drawings from the *Saturnia* series and other works—including the *Montagne* (Mountains) sculptures—are juxtaposed with archaeological artifacts from the historic Ciacci Collection. This arrangement highlights the artist’s subjective approach to drawing upon reality and underscores his connection to the Etruscan heritage—a theme also explored in an essay by Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli.

While retaining the evocative, dreamlike quality of the Maremma landscape, Novelli’s works nonetheless render a mental and inner space that seems to conjure up that "other" reality.
